Can you believe it's already time to start thinking about Back to School? If you have a new college kid, know that even with our cool closet hacks, all of their stuff will not fit in the closet. Or in the drawers. If they are anything like my kid, half the stuff they take to school they will never wear but good luck convincing them not to take all 37 pairs of shoes. We've put together some of our favorite dorm room hacks as well as dorm essentials that will make your student's life a bit easier, and maybe even more organized. Dorm Room EssentialsModular, stackable drawers can be configured in multiple ways and are easier to move in and out than one big unit. When roomie keeps the lights on until the wee hours, a sleep mask with earplugs will be a lifesaver. There are a thousand laundry hampers out there but we've found that one that can both store AND transport laundry is the most convenient. Speaking of too many shoes, this over the door shoe storage bag holds more shoes than any we've found. And it's way better than the pocket style in accommodating larger shoes. Shower totes are also a dime a dozen but the multiple compartments and nylon mesh construction make this our fave. Lastly, slim flocked hangers will allow for maximum capacity in your closet. Dorm Room HacksBeds that can be popped up on risers give you an amazing amount of storage underneath. To keep things looking neat, install a tension bar between the legs of the bed frame and hang short cafe curtains to cover up the storage bins, chest of drawers or fridge. Decorating the walls can be tricky without the use of nails. Command strips will be your best friend, regardless of what you hang, but you can have some fun with these ideas. Hanging a tapestry not only covers a large portion of ugly dorm room walls it can also be hung behind the bed as a mock headboard. Fancy string light photo holders like this one can be pricey. DIY your own with a strand of indoor lights and binder clips or mini clothes pins. Paint with metallic spray paint and you have the same idea for half the price. If you haven't heard of Washi Tape, don't feel bad. I hadn't either. Super dorm wall friendly, it sticks and peels easily and comes in a thousand colors and patterns. Use to frame photos, posters or create your very own art installation. Did I mention that the closets are small? This little double hanging rod gadget saved our lives and meant that I didn't have to take half of my daughter's clothes back home with me. So, good luck with move-in. Congrats on your little bird leaving the nest. It's amazing to watch them fly.
